A two-vehicle crash Sunday morning in the French River area sent two people to hospital after a moose was struck on Highway 64. “The collision occurred just before 8:30 a.m. after a passenger vehicle struck a moose on the highway and was subsequently struck from behind by a pickup truck,” Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Sept. 28. “The driver of the passenger vehicle sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the pickup truck sustained minor injuries.” OPP said both drivers were sent to an area hospital. Police said Highway 64 was closed for just under five hours on Sept. 27 as officers examined the scene. Wildlife safety Provincial police used the incident to remind motorists to stay alert and reduce speed when wildlife may be present near roadways. “Moose and other wildlife can be particularly active near roadways, especially during dawn and dusk,” said OPP. “If a moose enters the roadway, brake firmly and stay in your lane. Avoid swerving, as sudden manoeuvres can result in a loss of control or a collision with another vehicle.” “Watch for additional animals, as moose often travel in groups,” added police.
