Don’t hunt escaped cows, northwestern Ont. police warn

A collision March 1 on Highway 17 in Kenora led to several cows breaking free from their trailer, Ontario Provincial Police say.

The crash involving the commercial motor vehicle transporting the cows took place at the intersection with Inglis Lake Road around 10 a.m. local time.

“There is a plan in place to safely remove the remaining cattle from the area,” the OPP said in a news release this week.

Could result in criminal charges

“In the interest of public safety and the safety of the removal team, Kenora OPP is asking to refrain from hunting. Hunting the cattle may result in charges under the Trespass to Property Act as well as Criminal Code charges such as discharging a firearm recklessly, careless use of a firearm, and theft.”

Anyone who sees stray cattle along Highway 17 in the area of Inglis Lake Road is asked to contact the Kenora OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

“Thank you to everyone who has already called in and continue to drive safe and stay alert,” police said.

“We all have a role to play in keeping our community safe.”
