Christmas Day fire at Anderson House in Cochrane, Ont., displaces 20 people

Anderson House on Fourth Avenue in Cochrane, Ont., was destroyed by fire on Christmas Day, displacing 20 people who lived there.

Local volunteers have stepped forward to ensure they have food and clothing.

In a message to CTV News, the Cochrane Fire Department said the cause of the fire is still unknown and is being investigated by the Office of the Fire Marshall and by the Ontario Provincial Police.

“It’s too early in the investigation to comment on how it’s started or if it was suspicious,” the fire department said.

“The building had flames coming through the building when the fire department arrived. A total of 20 firefighters, along with three fire trucks arrived on scene to battle the blaze.”

Took eight hours to extinguish

It took about eight hours to put out the fire, which was reported around 9 a.m. Christmas Day.

“The department worked hard to protect the town hall that was only three feet away,” the message said.

“With the help of an excavator, the department was able to save the building. There is minimal damage to the town hall. We have no estimate yet for the building that was totally destroyed.”

People displaced by the fire are being housed at a local hotel and the Red Cross. The Ininiew Friendship Centre is coordinating the effort.

In a Facebook post, the Cochrane Regional Food Bank said donations to help those displaced by the fire will be accepted through the Ininew Friendship Centre.

“Community members wishing to donate are asked to visit the Ininew Friendship Centre’s Facebook page for detailed and up-to-date information on which items are currently being accepted.”

Care packages delivered

Volunteers stepped forward to deliver care packages for the displaced persons, allowing them to have a “slightly brighter Christmas.”

“Care packages were assembled, including bags and, where available, suitcases from the thrift store, filled with appropriate items to support individuals during their hotel stay as they await next steps,” the food bank said.

“These packages included food items, fresh goods, essential toiletries, utensils, plates, bowls, cups, and glasses, as well as hats, mitts and scarves … The kits were delivered directly to the individuals in need and were very much appreciated.”

In a post on the Ininew Friendship Centre’s Facebook page, the group said they have received a large amount of clothing and are no longer accepting clothing donations.

“We are incredibly grateful and thankful to everyone who came together to support one another during this difficult time,” the post said.

“At this time, we will be placing a temporary pause on further clothing donations, as we have received more than enough to meet the immediate needs. We will be distributing the donated items to those impacted by the fire this afternoon.”
