Buyer beware: Kenora resident tricked into buying phoney iPhone

Ontario Provincial Police in Kenora is reminding the public that deals that appear too good to be true almost always are.

In a recent case, a local resident paid for what they “believed to be a genuine iPhone from an unknown individual in a parking lot.”

“The buyer believed they were getting a good deal at the time, but later discovered the device was counterfeit when the Android Play Store appeared on what was presented as an Apple product,” the OPP said in a news release May 12.

Significant risk, sensitive data

“This incident serves as a reminder that purchasing electronics from unknown sellers carries significant risk. Entering personal information or account credentials into a fraudulent device may also expose sensitive data to individuals who could misuse it.”

Residents are encouraged to never buy “electronics or high‑value items from random individuals in parking lots or informal locations.”

“Be cautious of deals that appear unusually cheap or rushed,” police said.

“Avoid entering personal information, passwords or financial details into a device unless you are certain it is legitimate.”

Residents should be aware that counterfeit devices often allow someone else to access your accounts or stored information.

“Buy electronics only from certified, trusted, and reputable sellers,” police said.

“If something feels suspicious or too good to be true, walk away from the transaction.”

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of fraud is encouraged to contact the OPP or report the incident to the Canadian Anti‑Fraud Centre.
