Agnico Eagle outlines major expansion at Timmins mining luncheon

Agnico Eagle says it is planning a major expansion -- including a US$100 million investment to take the Detour Mine underground.

When the Timmins Chamber of Commerce announced Andre Leite, Agnico Eagle’s vice president of Ontario operations, as the keynote speaker for its October ‘The State of Mining’ luncheon, the event’s popularity necessitated an immediate expansion of seating arrangements.

The significant interest underscored the high stakes and keen attention being paid to the sector’s local trajectory.

“Because when we look at what’s presented, there is so much opportunity in the region, a lot of growth happening and it’s important that we are able to provide that information and that ultimately everybody’s able to gear up knowing what’s ahead of us,” said Melanie Dufresne, the local chamber president.

Agnico Eagle’s expansion and exploration initiatives

As Canada’s largest mining company and gold producer, Agnico Eagle used the platform to share significant development plans. A central message from Leite focused on the impending expansion of the Detour Mine, located 300 kilometres northeast of Timmins, which includes a strategic move towards underground operations.

“Our project is to go underground as well, so right now what we’re doing,” said Leite.

“We have an exploration phase that is up being approved for about $100 million U.S investment. What we are working towards is to better understand the orebody and understand the generalization, so we have to take a sample, so a chunk of the orebody, so we can test it.

Addressing the critical shortage of skilled workers

This ambitious growth occurs against a backdrop of widespread concern regarding a shortage of skilled labour, an issue highlighted in a recent chamber-led business confidence survey. Agnico Eagle’s own projections substantiate these concerns, revealing a substantial future need for employees.

“Yes, it is a big number,” said Leite, referring to the company’s projection that it will require 7,000 employees over the next 10 years.

“We are looking at doing this analysis it is really to better understand the picture, not just now but in ten years, so that we can suggest solutions right,” said Leite.

Strategic partnerships for housing and workforce development

The company recognizes that a larger workforce creates a direct need for increased housing, particularly in communities like Kirkland Lake where its Macassa Mine is a major employer. Leite indicated that the company is actively studying how it can help bolster local housing inventory.

“At this point, we’re still in the study phase, discussing with different partners, with the community, with the First Nations,” said Leite.

Beyond housing, Leite identified the training and recruitment of local youth, with a specific focus on First Nations communities within its operating territories, as another key strategy to meet its future employment needs.
