ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - The Newfoundland and Labrador government is taking steps to get rural communities to reduce their electricity bills.
Areas in the province that get electricity from diesel generators will soon receive free energy efficient products, including energy efficient light bulbs and low-flow shower heads.
In all, there are 42 communities that have diesel generators.
Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro says the three-year program will cost $2.6 million.
The goal is to reduce energy consumption by eight per cent.
