HALIFAX - Relatives of a Nova Scotia woman who died of a cancer linked to Agent Orange exposure in the 1960s are fighting for compensation from Ottawa.

Audrey Haynes died January 31st, just a month after the Department of Veterans Affairs said she was not eligible for a $20,000 payment.

The department says she didn't qualify for payment because she wasn't diagnosed with cancer until 12 days after a federally set deadline last year -- and didn't file her application until weeks later.

Haynes's husband, Keith, says he feels the federal government betrayed her.

NDP Veterans Affairs critic Peter Stoffer says the department is showing little compassion.

A spokeswoman for the department says each compensation payment is decided on a case-by-case basis.

Agent Orange was sprayed at CFB Gagetown in 1966 and 1967 by the U.S. military, with permission from Canada.
