KABUL, Afghanistan - NATO says two of its troops have been killed in southern Afghanistan.

In a statement Tuesday, the military alliance did not provide the troops' nationalities or other details surrounding their deaths.

Southern Afghanistan is the centre of the Taliban-led insurgency. The Taliban have made a comeback over the last three years after being initially defeated in the U.S. invasion in 2001.

In 2008, 286 foreign troops were killed in Afghanistan, up from 222 the previous year. NATO has more than 55,000 troops in Afghanistan from 41 countries.
