PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S. - A man who has been living in India for the past 13 years made his first court appearance Friday on a number of sex charges that date back to the 1970s.

Ernest Fenwick MacIntosh was remanded in custody until a bail hearing on Wednesday.

MacIntosh returned to Canada Thursday under RCMP escort.

The 63-year-old telecom engineer faces more than 40 sex-related charges.

Several men have come forward over the years to allege they were abused when they were teenagers.

One of the men, Weldon MacIntosh-Reynolds, says the case has reopened old wounds for him.

"It's been over 30 years and I'm at the point right now where I'm so frustrated with this justice system,'' he said outside provincial court.

Charges were originally laid in 1995, but it took several years for the extradition process to be completed.

The charges MacIntosh faces include indecent assault and gross indecency.

The former businessman, who had operated his own electronics company, was once on the executive boards of a junior B hockey association and the Cape Breton Offshore Trade Association.

Nova Scotia prosecutors first asked Ottawa to extradite MacIntosh in 1998. Federal authorities said they needed more information before they could approach the Indian government, and the RCMP was asked to further investigate the case.

MacIntosh was picked up by authorities in New Delhi earlier this year after receiving a request from the federal Justice Department.
