SASKATOON - A Western farm group says it has followed through with its threat to file legal action against the Canadian Wheat Board.

The Western Canadian Wheat Growers is trying to block the board from going to court over the Harper government's plan to strip the board of its monopoly powers.

On Thursday the growers filed an application in Federal Court asking for a judicial review of the board's lawsuit.

The growers say the board has no legal right to block proposed legislation that would create an open market for wheat and barley.

There is no word on when the Federal Court will rule on the growers' application.

A group called Friends of the Canadian Wheat Board has also gone to court over the fate of the marketing agency.
