The new leader of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ), and the person who will replace François Legault as premier, is set to be chosen on April 12. To qualify, candidates must obtain the signatures of 1,000 CAQ members from at least 75 ridings, including 15 members of the National Assembly and 100 members of the party’s youth wing. They must also make a non-refundable lump sum contribution of $30,000. Election expenses are capped at $150,000. “Voting will be conducted by telephone, in secret, using a preferential voting system,” according to the CAQ website. “Voters will rank the candidates in order of preference, and the candidate obtaining an absolute majority (50 per cent + 1) will be declared the leader at the party convention.” More details to come.
