Do not consume chili, thyme or rosemary-flavoured oils in glass jars prepared and sold by Panier Gourmand Inc., warns Quebec’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ). “They have not been prepared and packaged in a manner that ensures their safety,” the ministry states. “These products could promote the growth of Clostridium botulinum bacteria.” The products affected include: The products were packaged in a glass jar with a metal lid and were sold at room temperature. The recall has been issued as a precautionary measure. “Anyone who has one of these products in their possession is advised not to consume it,” MAPAQ states. “They should return it to the establishment where they purchased it or discard it.” The ministry warns that even if the items show no signs of spoilage or suspicious odour, they could promote the growth of Clostridium botulinum bacteria. “Food contaminated with this bacterium’s toxin can cause the following symptoms when ingested: facial paralysis, unresponsive or fixed pupils, difficulty swallowing, drooping eyelids, and vision and speech problems,” MAPAQ insists. “In severe cases, the disease can be fatal.” Anyone experiencing symptoms is advised to consult a health care professional.
