The residential real estate market is holding steady in Quebec, despite the economic slowdown and sluggish job market. The number of properties changing hands and prices rose in the third quarter compared to last year, according to data released Tuesday by the Quebec Professional Association of Real Estate Brokers (APCIQ). The median price of a single-family home in Quebec is $490,000, up nine per cent from last year. Prices vary greatly from region to region. For example, the median price in the Montreal area is $630,000, an annual increase of seven per cent. In the Saguenay metropolitan area, it reached $350,000, a 17 per cent jump. The number of transactions increased in almost all regions surveyed, with the exception of a “slight decline” in Baie-Comeau, Sainte-Adèle, Granby, Victoriaville and Thetford Mines. The market remained “clearly in favour of sellers,” while supply remains insufficient and some regions are “severely” lacking in housing on the market, APCIQ economist Hélène Bégin pointed out in a press release.
