The price most Montrealers pay to take public transit will be going up again this summer. On Wednesday, the Greater Montreal regional transit authority (ARTM) announced the new pricing that will go into effect on July 1, adding that increases will be indexed to inflation to take into account “citizens’ ability to pay in order to maintain the affordability of services for all customers.” “In the current economic context, the ARTM has made the responsible and necessary choice of maintaining the indexation of public transit fares in the Montreal metropolitan region at three per cent. This measure makes it possible to limit the financial impact on customers, while ensuring that we can continue to offer reliable, high-performance service,” said Benoît Gendron, ARTM director general, in a news release. Fares for one- and two-trip tickets will remain the same price for Zone A. The ARTM said it will continue implementing special bus tickets linked to the launch of Réseau express métropolitain (REM), as well as withdraw certain former Exo, TRAM and TRAIN tickets. The last time prices increased, in April 2024, the monthly pass for Zone A (Island of Montreal) went from $97 to $100. It is going up again this year by a few dollars. Last December, the ARTM said it had to cut $3 million in restructuring as ridership was on the decline. After the Quebec budget was released in March, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) described it as “a setback” as nearly $260 million from funding for the maintenance of public transit was slashed over the next three years. While the Quebec transport ministry said it was providing more money than ever before for public transit, the STM argued most of the money is for development, not maintenance.
