Quebec City police carried out 14 searches and made 13 arrests on Tuesday in connection with the December murder of Jennifer Morin in the Charlesbourg area of Quebec City. Investigator Marie-Manon Simard, of the Quebec City Police Service (SPVQ), confirmed the killing was a case of mistaken identity. “The real target was her son, Jeffrey Morin. Jeffrey Morin was identified as a person connected to the BFM (Blood Family Mafia), so drug trafficking and arms trafficking are part of his criminal history.” The suspects taken into custody are men and women aged 18 to 51. They were detained for questioning by investigators from the various services involved in the arrests, which took place in multiple locations across Quebec and Ontario. In a statement, the SPVQ said the individuals “were arrested in connection with murder and conspiracy to commit murder offences.” The SPVQ did not rule out the possibility of additional arrests and searches in the case. Some 200 officers from the SPVQ, the SQ, Montreal police (SPVM), Laval police (SPL), Longueuil police (SPAL), Ottawa police, and Ontario Provincial Police took part in the large-scale operation, which was led by the SPVQ. Jennifer Morin, 45, was found dead in her apartment on Dec. 16. From the outset, investigators considered that the killing might have been a case of mistaken identity. The Blood Family Mafia is engaged in a violent conflict with the Hells Angels in eastern Quebec. Jeffrey Morin was arrested in late January for arms trafficking and had a prior record for drug trafficking. He was sentenced to seven years in federal prison last July.
