A half-decade and almost $50 million later, the Oceania aquatic complex south of Montreal is finally set to open its doors on Saturday. The facility off Highway 20 on Industry Street in Beloeil was scheduled to open in 2021, but was postponed to 2023, then 2024, after the COVID-19 pandemic derailed plans. Lobato Group developed the project, which was hampered by soaring construction costs, refinancing and a disagreement with the design engineers, according to Noovo Info. In addition, specialized equipment imported from Europe was reportedly stolen. The 135,000 square foot complex was initially budgeted at $34.5 million, but estimates suggest it could exceed $48 million by the end of the year. Noovo Info was granted access to the space, which includes a series of water slides, a surf pool, a lazy river, splash pads, an arcade and a resto-bar. It is the only indoor water park in the region. “We think we can accommodate between 300,000 and 450,000 people per year,” said co-owner and real estate developer José Lobato. “According to other market studies, it could even reach 750,000 people per year.” Nearly 150 lifeguards have been hired, along with 50 other staff members. “People who come here will feel like they’re on vacation.
