MUHC unveils $20M fellowship to boost Quebec’s biomedical research

The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre has launched a $20-million postdoctoral fellowship program to attract the top young researchers.

Montreal is making a major play to become a global hub for biomedical research.

The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre has launched a $20-million postdoctoral fellowship program designed to attract the top young researchers from Canada and abroad.

Dubbed Canada’s Best, the new fellowship program includes $14 million in philanthropic support and was created through a collaboration between the institute, the McGill University Health Centre, and its four foundations.

The fellowship aims to strengthen Quebec’s position as a “leading force” in biomedical research by recruiting up to 100 researchers over the coming years and increasing scientific output and discovery potential.

“Postdoctoral fellows will work alongside scientists across disciplines, access highly specialized research platforms and benefit from a uniquely collaborative culture that bridges discovery and clinical care in pediatric and adult settings,” the institute said in a news release.

Each fellow will receive an annual stipend and a dedicated budget for research expenses, supplies, travel and training.

Participants will also have access to structured mentorship and career development support.

“Postdoctoral fellows are the driving force behind our research programs: they do more than support discovery — they propel it forward,” said Rhian Touyz, executive director and chief scientific officer at the institute.

“Through philanthropy and the Canada’s Best program, we are investing in the next generation of scientific leaders and bringing the institute’s Vision 2030 to life by accelerating advancements in precision care and treatments tailored to each individual and grounded in the latest scientific discoveries.”
