A “no tyrants” or “no kings” protest was held downtown at Place du Canada Saturday, protesting U.S. president Donald Trump. Hundreds came out in support of our neighbours to the south. Barbara Scales of Democrats Abroad called it “a rally against tyranny.” “It’s rooted in greed for power, greed for wealth. And it seems to be insatiable. And what stops it is us as people,” she said. Protester made speeches, musicians performed and a crowd full of people with satirical signs and costumes cheered along. Indivisible Quebec organized the rally. Most people in attendance were Montreal residents, but some of the organizers are expatriate Americans. “As dual citizens, it’s our job to represent our point of view and to protest our dissatisfaction with the current administration’s policies and behavior,” said co-organizer David Shelton. Saturday’s event was held in solidarity with other protests against the Trump administration. According to organizers, roughly 2,000 other organized rallies also took place all over the world. “As citizens of any country on earth, we need to be conscious of the threat of tyranny and to stand against it,” said Scales. The show of unity across the globe is indicative of trump’s unprecedented approach in the oval office, according to experts. “This has been a tumultuous time in American history, a unique time. There’s never been a president so willing to go against the American Constitution,” said Leonard Moore, a retired American History professor at McGill University. For Canadians, it’s about more than just standing beside our southern neighbours. “The slander and the notion, the threats of making Canada the 51st state, it’s important that we, express our dissatisfaction,” aid Shelton.
