Montreal launches second snow-removal operation Saturday night

The second snow-removal operation has been scheduled on Saturday evening starting at 7 p.m. across the island.

The City of Montreal is advising residents to monitor updates from their boroughs and take steps to help speed operations up, including by following parking restrictions and keeping sidewalks clear or bulky items.

Residents should also leave garbage bags and bins on their property. Vehicles should be parked parallel to the sidewalks, 30 centimetres from the curb and car mirrors should be folded.

The city says that nearly 3,000 workers and 2,500 snow-clearing vehicles will take part in snow-loading efforts covering about 11,000 kilometres of municipal roads.

For those looking for parking, 8,223 overnight spaces will be available between 9 p.m. and 7 am. The city says parking restrictions will be lifted quickly once the operations are complete.

New 311 Montreal app

The city has also upgraded its official mobile app with new snow-removal features that allow residents to follow operations in real time.

Formerly known as Montréal – services aux citoyens, the app has been modernized and renamed 311 Montréal.

Residents can download the new 311 Montréal app on Android or Apple devices, or update the previous version.

According to the city, the redesign includes alerts and notifications for updates and emergencies, a real-time snow removal map, and a space to report issues such as graffiti, slippery sidewalks or potholes.

For safety reasons when around snow-removal vehicles it is important to make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you because vehicles often need to move forward and backward and have large blind spots.
