Hydro-Québec announced Tuesday it will build a new indoor substation in downtown Montreal to meet growing electricity demand in the city’s core. The project, set to be operational in 2034, will be located at the corner of René-Lévesque Boulevard and Saint-Hubert Street. It will be designed to support major upcoming developments such as Quartier des lumières, Îlot Voyageur and Quartier Molson, as well as key institutions including the STM, the CHUM and UQAM. Rising demand from building electrification and transportation is also driving the need. The substation will replace two previously planned facilities — Berri and Dorchester — after Hydro-Québec combined the projects into one site at the former Institut des Sœurs de la Miséricorde. The company says the change will reduce land acquisition needs and simplify the underground distribution system. Hydro-Québec promised to preserve part of the historic Institut buildings, hold an architectural competition for the new structure, and create community-oriented spaces. Public consultations with residents, heritage experts and local organizations will begin this fall. The utility said the substation is essential for the long-term economic and social development of downtown Montreal.
