A major roadway in downtown Montreal is scheduled to close for eight years for a major construction project. The project, starting the week of Aug. 18, means Docteur-Penfield Avenue will be shut down between McTavish Street and Pine Avenue West until 2033, the Ville-Marie borough announced Friday. The closure is to allow for upgrades to the McTavish pumping station. The extensive duration of the project is expected to impact local traffic and transit. To manage the changes, new signage is set to be installed on Aug. 18. Docteur-Penfield Avenue will be completely closed to through-traffic in the construction zone. Meanwhile, a section of Pine Avenue West will become a two-way street between Docteur-Penfield and Peel Street to help facilitate movement. Drivers are advised that no parking will be permitted in the construction zone on Docteur-Penfield, McTavish or Pine. Despite the closure, pedestrian access will be maintained for all McGill University buildings, as well as access to parking lots for McGill University on McTavish. Local traffic, including deliveries and buses, will also be permitted on Docteur-Penfield between Peel and McTavish and on McTavish. Construction crews are slated to work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, with night and weekend work scheduled as needed. The Ville-Marie borough has stated it will provide further updates as the project progresses.
