Culture minister decides to tear down Redpath mansion

The mansion was originally built by the Redpath family in 1886.

Time has run out for the Redpath mansion downtown.

Quebec's Culture Minister Maka Kotto decided Friday that the historic building is not worth saving and can be torn down.

Kotto issued a statement saying after analyzing the historical significance of the mansion, it was determined that it “does not present a national heritage interest.”

Groups, including Heritage Montreal, have been trying to save the decaying building for decades.

Originally built by the Redpath family in 1886, the family owned the Redpath sugar refinery, helped build the Lachine Canal and much of McGill University.

Last, month Kotto stopped the planned demolition while he made his decision.

The current owners of the property hope to build student housing.
