CF Montreal has issued lifetime bans to several fans after “acts of vandalism,” and pyrotechnics were thrown on the field after Wednesday’s match. The local club lost the Canadian Championship final match on penalties at Stade Saputo to Canadian Premier League team Forge FC from Hamilton. Montreal has not won a game in nearly a month. “The Club recognizes the disappointment and dissatisfaction surrounding the team’s sporting results,” CF Montreal said in a news release. “However, results on the field can never, under any circumstances, justify violence, vandalism or any behaviour that puts the safety of others at risk.” The team said those who are “formally identified” will receive a lifetime ban. It also strengthened security measures, and police presence will be in place at the stadium for upcoming matches. “These measures are being implemented to ensure the safety and security of fans, players, officials, employees, and everyone in attendance,” the team said. The team added that further cases will result in stricter sanctions that may include closing support sections. “The Club will not hesitate to take any additional measures necessary to prevent further incidents and protect the safety of everyone at Stade Saputo,” the team said. CF Montreal sits at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings with 25 points after 30 games, and only Kansas City has fewer points in MLS with 22. Montreal plays Nashville Saturday at Stade Saputo at 1:30 p.m.
