TORONTO - The home of Lucy Maud Montgomery, the Canadian author who wrote Anne of Green Gables, has been designated a national historic site.

Leaskdale Manse, built around 1886 in Uxbridge, Ont., was the place where the writer penned 11 of the 20 books she published in her lifetime.

It was the first of three homes she lived in after her marriage to a Presbyterian minister, and where she gave birth to her children.

Uxbridge bought the Manse in 1993, and is presently restoring it to look the same as when Montgomery lived there.

Durham region MP Beverley Oda commemorated the designation with a plaque Saturday.

It marks the centennial anniversary of the publication of Anne of Green Gables.
