Although the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s baby has been born, the media frenzy surrounding the child is just heating up. One of the big questions still to be answered is: who will be the godparents to the future king of England?

The baby was born at 4:24 p.m. local time weighing 8 pounds and 6 ounces. Royal watchers are eagerly awaiting more details of the birth, and of course, the first picture.

But a big decision that lies ahead for Prince William and Kate is who they will choose to serve as godmother and godfather.

Unlike the average family, Royal tradition allows for several godparents, at least five to eight. Sure enough, Prince Charles has eight, while Princes William and Harry each have six.

It may only be around the time of the Christening, usually six weeks to two months after the child is born, that we find out who they are. The timing of the birth, however, may delay that even further, given that the Queen is customarily not in London for the months of August and September.

A day after Kate’s pregnancy was announced, British bookmaker William Hill put Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton at even money to be godmother and godfather. Other choices included:

  • Earl Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother, at 6-1 odds
  • Prince William’s cousin, Zara Phillips, at 8-1
  • Zara’s husband, rugby player Mike Tindall, at 33-1
  • Soccer star David Beckham at 25-1
  • British Prime Minister David Cameron at 50-1

“Becks loves children and I am sure he would make a fine Godfather,” said William Hill spokesperson Rupert de Quincey Adams.

While Harry and Pippa seem the top choices, Royal watchers are also suggesting William may ask the parents of children to whom he is godparent to share in the honours. William’s godson is Prince Constantine Alexios, son of Crown Prince Pavlos and Crown Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece, while his goddaughter is little Grace van Cutsem, the flower girl who famously covered her ears to block out the roaring crowd and jet flyover as the newlywed Duke and Duchess kissed on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

Meanwhile, other names have popped up in the British press of likely candidates, including Thomas van Straubenzee, one of Prince William’s oldest and closest friends; one of the three other van Cutsem brothers, Edward, Nicholas and William; James Meade, William’s friend from Eton; and Hannah Gillingham, one of Kate’s best friends from Marlborough College.
