A North Korean court has sentenced a Canadian reverend from Mississauga, Ont., to life in prison.

Rev. Hyeon Soo Lim has been accused of anti-state activities.

He had travelled to North Korea from China on Jan. 31 for a humanitarian mission and had been expected to return on Feb. 4, but was instead detained.

A spokesperson for the Light Korean Presbyterian Church said Lim had travelled to North Korea to support building a nursery, orphanage and nursing home.

Before he was detained, Lim had travelled to North Korea more than 100 times since 1997.
