OTTAWA - Canada's dispute with the United Arab Emirates over airline landing rights appears to have taken a new twist.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has issued a warning that Canadians travelling to the U.A.E. on business or as tourists will be required to apply for a visa in the new year.

There are about 25,000 Canadians living in the U.A.E., according to the oil-rich Gulf country's embassy website.

Canada and the U.A.E. have been haggling over airport landing rights for months.

Last month, the U.A.E. abruptly ended an agreement that allowed the Canadian Forces to use a military transportation hub near Dubai.

The Harper government resisted demands to increase Canadian landing rights for the Emirates' two state-owned airlines, and the U.A.E. retaliated by telling Ottawa it had a month to clear out of Camp Mirage.

The camp is a critical logistics and supply point for Canada's 2,750 troops in Afghanistan and its loss is complicating the withdrawal plans for Canadian soldiers next year.
