CALGARY - The suspect in a case in which a man was beaten, starved and tortured before being dumped at a Regina hospital appeared to be agitated and angry at his first court appearance in Calgary.

Dustin Paxton appeared in court this morning via video link wearing a blue prison jumpsuit.

Paxton ran his fingers through his his hair, rocked back and forth with his arms folded and occasionally laughed during the reading of his charges which include aggravated assault, forcible confinement and breach of probation.

He shook his head "No" when charges related to assaults against his former roommate Dustin LaFortune were detailed.

When asked if he understood the charges and options available to him, Paxton replied; "I don't understand a word you guys are saying. Maybe I should have a lawyer".

Paxton's next court appearance is set for Sept. 3.
