RCMP in a northern Alberta town are trying to recover an Olympic champions ring belonging to gold-medal curler Brad Jacobs after it was reported stolen from a motel room last week.

In a statement released Wednesday, RCMP in Boyle, Alta., say the ring, given to Jacobs in commemoration of his team’s gold-medal success at the Winter Games in Sochi this past February, was stolen from a motel room sometime between June 20 and June 21.

The Olympian was in town to participate in a charity golf tournament, which is where he was at the time of the thefts, police say.

His ring is described as sporting a square face with curved edges and bearing an image of the Olympic rings in the centre. The face of the ring is inscribed with the words, “Olympic Champions 2014.” On the inside, a customized engraving reads “Brad Jacobs Skip.”

Jacobs led Canada to a men’s curling gold with a win over Britain at the Winter Games.

Boyle RCMP Cst. Alex Ayres said police are seeking the public’s assistance in recovering the ring, as it holds a “great amount of sentimental value” for Jacobs.

“While we continue to investigate the theft, our hope is that the ring be reunited with Mr. Jacobs.”

In the police statement, Boyle Mayor Don Radmanovich said theft is a “rare occurrence” in the town. “We happen to have a very strong police presence in the Village of Boyle and crimes like this just generally don’t happy in our community.”

Boyle is located approximately 150 kilometres north of Edmonton.
