The Invictus Games flag reached Calgary on Tuesday as it continued its cross-country journey ahead of next month’s event in Toronto.

Prince Harry created the multi-sport competition in 2014 as a way to celebrate injured, ill and wounded service men and women.

The games will see wounded warriors participate in athletic challenges, showcasing an active road back to health.

In Calgary the flag was handed to Capt. Rita Richter, who knows how psychological injuries can affect families back home. Her husband struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in Afghanistan in 2008.

She said an introduction to cycling was a big help for him.

“He got a bit of a spark back into his life and he owns a bicycle shop now,” she told CTV Calgary.

This year’s games will see approximately 550 competitors from 17 countries come together to compete in 12 adaptive sports including, sitting volleyball, archery, cycling, rowing, swimming and for the first time ever, golf.
