Conservative candidate Ted Opitz was declared the winner of the election race in Etobicoke Centre on Monday, after the results of a judicial recount were released.

Opitz won the tight race with 21,644 votes over incumbent Liberal candidate Borys Wrzesnewskyj who finished with just 26 fewer votes.

Following are the post-recount results for all candidates in the riding (pre-recount results in brackets):

  • Conservative candidate Ted Opitz: 21,644 (21,661)
  • Liberal candidate Borys Wrzesnewskyj: 21,618 (21,635)
  • NDP candidate Ana Maria Rivero: 7,735 (7,731)
  • Marxist-Leninist candidate Sarah Thompson: 149 (149)
  • Green candidate Katarina Zoricic: 1,377 (1,454)

Both candidates had 17 fewer votes after the recount than the did on election night, maintaining the 26-vote difference that was reported on election night on May 2.

There were more than 52,000 votes cast in the riding.

The recount was carried out by Madame Justice Susan G. Himel of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. The results were announced Monday by Chief Electoral Officer of Canada Marc Mayrand.

The recount was automatically ordered because the difference between the two candidates was less than a thousandth of the total votes cast.
