The Conservatives have made balancing the books a key part of their election platform, and on Wednesday Finance Minister Joe Oliver announced the country is projected to post a budget surplus of $1.9 billion in the 2015-2016 fiscal year, much smaller than was projected last February.

Oliver said a deficit of $2.9 billion is expected for the 2014-2015 fiscal year, the same number projected in the February budget.
