ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - A candidate in the upcoming provincial election in Newfoundland and Labrador who recently came under fire for her comments on cancer says she is stepping down.
Progressive Conservative Tina Olivero drew criticism after suggesting earlier this week that some people with cancer can cure themselves with self-awareness.
She later clarified her comments, saying self-awareness is one aspect of illness treatment.
Olivero explained in a lengthy message on Facebook that she did not returns calls for media interviews because "being picked apart and having your words manipulated is not worth it."
Another post to Olivero's Facebook page Thursday night said she was stepping down as candidate for St. John's East-Quidi Vidi.
The latest post stated her comments have been misconstrued and that she's "not prepared to be held hostage by any media."
The executive director of the provincial PC party confirmed Olivero had "removed herself" as a candidate.
Sharon Vokey said Friday the paperwork is being filed to make the withdrawal official.
