MONTREAL - Quebec's director of criminal prosecutions has announced a Montreal police officer who fatally shot a teenager will not face charges.
Louis Dionne made the announcement this evening at the Montreal courthouse.
Fredy Villanueva was shot by police on Aug. 9 during an altercation in a Montreal-North park.
Montreal police have said officers were attempting to arrest a wanted man when they were surrounded by about 20 youths.
The 18-year-old's death sparked rioting in the Montreal-North neighbourhood where it happened. Four people were injured, businesses were looted and cars were burned in the riot.
Quebec Justice Minister Jacques Dupuis said he has called a public inquiry into the shooting. Dupuis said he supported the decision not to lay charges, but added people want a full and independent investigation of the fatal shooting.
