A week-long recall of walnuts that might be contaminated with E. coli has been expanded again, as the Canadian Food Inspection Agency continues its investigation.

The CFIA issued a health hazard alert late Wednesday, warning consumers about the risk from a range of bulk and packaged nuts and snacks. The recall now includes not just walnuts, but other packaged nuts and snacks, as well as packaged raisins and toasted corn snacks.

Some of the products have been sold in bulk; others are sold under such brand names as President's Choice, the Compliments house brand and the Longos house brand.

The nuts came from Toronto-based Johnvince Foods, which imported them from the United States. There are worries the nuts may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7.

No illnesses directly related to E. coli-tainted walnuts have been reported.

Food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled. Eating E-coli contaminated foods can lead to illness that causes abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. Severe cases of E. coli-related illnesses can be fatal.

Earlier this year, 14 people were sickened after eating E. coli-contaminated walnuts distributed by Montreal-based Amira Enterprises.

One patient in Quebec with an underlying medical condition died during the outbreak, which also affected people in Ontario and New Brunswick.
