A section of the Moncton Headstart building's roof collapsed Sunday night under the weight of snow after the city was pummeled with yet another storm.

The collapse happened Sunday at about 7:30 p.m., but no one was hurt.

Building inspector Gerry Leblanc said the section that collapsed was more than 50 years old and would probably not be up to code if built today. The part of the roof that did not collapse was newer.

The building has been closed and family programs cancelled. Repairs are expected to take a week or two.

The latest storm dropped 20 centimetres of snow. According to Environment Canada, there is about a metre of snow on the ground in Moncton, and more is on the way.

Leblanc says it is only a matter of time before another roof collapses and older commercial buildings are particularly troublesome.

The constant storms have stretched the city's $5-million snow removal budget. The city has had more than 215 cm of the white stuff since the start of the season.

The city is also running out of places to dump the snow, but officials say that there is still room.
