The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says Freshouse Foods is recalling its Kirkland Signature brand Grilled Chicken Breast Strips due to a possible Listeria contamination.

The CFIA said on Thursday that the Costco store brand product has been sold in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, but possibly other provinces as well.

The recalled product, which contains two 500 gram pouches, has best before dates ranging from April 13 to April 26. The agency is advising people who have purchased the product to either throw it out or return it to the store where they purchased it.

“Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness,” the CFIA said on its website.

The agency is warning that elderly people and others with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk of illness from consuming the product. The agency added that while pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, “the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. “

Some cases of Listeria have led to death.

The CFIA says the recall was triggered after the agency conducted tests on the product. A safety investigation is underway, and the CFIA says more products could be recalled.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the product.
