ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - A group of Newfoundland musicians is stepping in to raise money for lupus after Selena Gomez cancelled her performance in the province due to her own struggles with the illness.

Gomez announced earlier this week that she would be cancelling her show to deal with her lupus diagnosis.

That's when some local musicians in St. John's decided to use the opportunity to raise money for the disease.

Matt Dines is organizing the event tonight at The Rockhouse.

He says it's a simple gesture and the musicians will give all the money raised at the door to the non-profit group Lupus N-L.

Gomez had been scheduled to play in Paradise, Newfoundland, tomorrow and Moncton, New Brunswick, the following day.

Some critics panned her decision to put off the tour, saying she should just "suck it up" and do the Paradise show despite her illness.
