As CTV News’ Medical Correspondent, Avis Favaro specializes in health stories that can make a difference in the lives of Canadians. Based in Toronto, Favaro is Canada’s longest serving television Medical Correspondent, having started this beat for CTV News in 1992.
Since then she has reported on a wide variety of health issues, including medical errors, drug shortages, mental health, novel therapies for cancer, and the latest therapies for neurological diseases.
Favaro has been recognized with a total of 13 Gemini Award nominations, winning a 1997 Gemini Award for Best Reportage for a story on an experimental treatment for cancer.
Along with medical producer Elizabeth St. Philip, Favaro has been recognized with multiple awards – by the Canadian Medical Association, the Canadian Nurses Association, the Ontario Registered Nurses Association, and the RTDNA.
Favaro holds an honourary PhD from McMaster University. She also has an honourary membership to the Federation of Medical Women of Canada. She is a graduate of Western University in London, Ont., where she earned a Master’s Degree in Journalism. She speaks English, Italian, and a bit of French.
