OTTAWA - A Commons committee might soon probe policing of the recent G20 protests after the NDP pushed for hearings.

The public safety committee is expected to meet as early as Friday -- but more likely Monday -- to debate a motion for hearings.

New Democrat MP Don Davies says the meeting will be the first opportunity to publicly address serious security questions about the Toronto summit of world leaders.

Hundreds of people were arrested amid damage to shops and cars in the city's downtown.

The NDP wants MPs to look at the conduct of summit security personnel, alleged violations of civil liberties, property destruction and possible compensation for business owners.

The party, which has the support of the Liberals and the Bloc Quebecois, would examine the involvement of all three levels of government in G20 security plans.
