A 29-year-old Calgary man has been charged after a cabbie was assaulted and carjacked.

The driver of a Checker Cab picked up two men around 9 a.m. Wednesday. The suspects then led the driver out of the city, assaulted him and stole his taxi.

The stolen cab was found abandoned in an alley in the northeast community of Falconridge.

Peter Joseph Neidig was arrested at a nearby strip mall, but a second suspect was able to elude police.

Neidig is charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon (knife) for the purpose of committing an offence, theft over $5,000 of the taxicab and possession of stolen property.

Neidig appeared before of Justice of the Peace Thursday morning for a bail hearing, but he was denied bail and remanded into custody.

He's set to appear in Strathmore Provincial Court on January 4, 2011.

Police are still searching for the second suspect.
