The family of an RCMP auxiliary constable who was wounded in a shooting that killed his partner is offering its “deepest sympathy” to the slain Mountie’s family.

In a brief statement issued Friday, the family of Auxiliary Const. Derek Bond says it “expresses its deepest sympathy” to the family of Const. David Matthew Wynn, who died Wednesday.

“We are also extremely grateful for the messages and gestures of support we have received from the community,” the Bond family statement went on.

Wynn, 42, suffered a gunshot wound to the head when a suspect opened fire on the two officers at an Alberta casino last Saturday.  He never regained consciousness and died Wednesday in hospital.

Bond, 49, was shot in the arm and torso, and faces a long recovery at home.

According to the family statement, Bond’s recovery “is progressing, but this remains a very difficult time for us.”

The family asked the media for privacy.

The RCMP has ordered a review into how the force interacted with the man who shot Bond and Wynn. Shawn Rehn, 34, was found dead of an apparent suicide in a home not far from the casino.

Rehn had a lengthy criminal history and was facing numerous other charges when he attacked the officers.

Alberta’s justice minister has also ordered a review into how Crown dealt with Rehn.
