A woman was strangled to death Thursday when her scarf and hair got caught in the moving escalator at a Montreal metro station.

Police say the 47-year-old woman was found at the bottom of an escalator at the Fabre station at around 9:15 a.m.

The woman has been indentified as Naima Rharouity.

Paramedics tried to revive her, but were unsuccessful.

“I can recall a lot of accidents in the escalators in the metro over my career, but I’ve never seen anything quite like this,” said Robert Lamle of Urgences Sante.

The coroner is now investigating what police say appears to have been a tragic accident.

Police said surveillance video footage will be reviewed in an effort to determine exactly what happened.
