After more than a year of dodging the prying lenses of paparazzi cameras and avoiding intrusive questions about her love life, U.S. actress Meghan Markle has finally opened up about her high-profile romance with Prince Harry.

The 36-year-old actress and Toronto resident spoke about dating the, arguably, most-popular member of the Royal Family in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine at her home in Toronto.

When asked about how she handles the intense media glare she’s been subjected to ever since rumours of the relationship surfaced last fall, Markle told the magazine that she just tries to ignore it.

“We’re two people who are really happy and in love,” she said. “We were very quietly dating for about six months before it became news, and I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people’s perception.”

The Suits actress said she met the prince through mutual friends in London and repeatedly referred to him as her “boyfriend” throughout the interview.

Markle even added fuel to the fire for those persistent royal engagement rumours when she hinted that the pair would eventually have to “present” their relationship to the public in a more official way.

“We’re a couple,” Markle said. “We’re in love. I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”

There has been rampant speculation that Prince Harry proposed to Markle during a recent trip to Botswana in August to celebrate her birthday, but there has been no official confirmation or announcement from the palace related to the gossip.
