Amidst torrential rain and howling winds, Environment Canada has confirmed that a tornado touched down in southern Ontario on Saturday.

The storm system, which enveloped the region in heavy thunderstorms after days of intense heat and humidity, whirled into a tornado near the southeastern shore of Lake Simcoe.

“Based on the damage to some buildings and trees, winds were estimated at 150 to 175 km/h,” Environment Canada said in a statement Sunday. The tornado is the fifth of the season in Ontario.

Downbursts from strong winds also caused damage to buildings across the Greater Toronto Area. Environment Canada says the storm was “more reminiscent of the tropics.”

More heavy rain is expected across the region on Tuesday.
