A New Brunswick man with only one leg will be walking approximately 300 kilometres on crutches in four days to raise funds and awareness about amputees.

Mohamed Benziane lost his leg when he was 18 years old, and now he’s on a mission to raise money, and give hope to others with mobility challenges.

“I’m not going to sleep, I’m going to go all night, I’m going to walk,” Benziane said Thursday, as he began walking the distance equivalent to seven marathons.

Inspired by famous amputee Terry Fox, who embarked on a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research, Benziane says he also hopes to trek across the country one day.

Benziane’s girlfriend Jocelyn Fraser, who’s accompanying him on his journey, said she thinks it’s “always important to follow our dreams.”

“It’s important to challenge ourselves, to reach things that we didn’t think we were capable of,” she told CTV Atlantic. “And I think what he’s doing is important and it means a lot to a lot of people.”
