Two occupants aboard a military training plane were able to eject safely before their aircraft crashed southwest of Moose Jaw, Sask. on Friday morning.

The crash happened at approximately 10:30 a.m. local time, near 15 Wing Moose Jaw.

The two aviators aboard the CT-156 Harvard II trainer aircraft were a Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) flight instructor and an RCAF student. Both were located by first responders.

“While the full extent of the injuries are not known at this time, we are relieved that the two occupants of the aircraft were able to eject with non-life threatening injuries,” the Department of National Defence said in a press release.

The Department of National Defence says that the names of the instructor and the student will not be released.

Although the cause of the crash was not immediately known, an investigation will be conducted by a flight safety team from Ottawa at a to-be-determined date.

The Moose Jaw base is the main site for the NATO flight-training program in Canada. It is also home to the Snowbirds aerobatic demonstration team.
