HALIFAX -- A Halifax-based warship has arrived in the Black Sea to take part in NATO training exercises.

The Defence Department says HMCS Fredericton and five other allied warships will participate in a month-long operation to improve maritime security in central and eastern Europe.

The department says the exercises are directly related to Russia's aggression towards Ukraine.

The six ships will take part in warfare exercises as well as a simulated small-boat attacks.

The vessels will also conduct port visits in the region.

The other warships are from the United States, Turkey, Germany, Italy and Romania.
