A Halifax woman who won $1 million in the Atlantic Lottery in October has advice for her fellow winners: “Don’t blow it.”

Jamie MacKenzie, 21, did buy a new car after cashing her cheque, but it is a simple Hyundai Accent hatchback, which has a starting list price of $13,899.

“I had customers telling me that I had to buy a Cadillac or I had to buy an Infiniti,” she said. “I don’t need a Cadillac -- I just want a simple car to get me from point A to point B.”

MacKenzie quit her job at a gas station so that she could travel to places like Disney World and Cuba, but she is already considering going back to work.

And while she paid off her mother’s car, and took her to see the Boston Bruins, the two still live together in a small condo.

By living modestly, MacKenzie is hoping to make her million last a lifetime. So far, she’s living mostly off the interest it earns.
