A Toronto-based men's clothing company has fired an employee who posted an offensive comment on a memorial site for deceased B.C. teenager Amanda Todd.
According to reports, a Mr. Big & Tall employee who worked at a London, Ont., store wrote "Thank God this b---- is dead," on a memorial page for Todd, who took her own life last week after months of online blackmail and bullying.
A mother and anti-bullying activist in Calgary saw the comment and traced it back to the man's Facebook page, which listed his occupation. She then emailed the company, prompting the individual’s dismissal.
The CEO of Mr. Big & Tall acknowledged in a statement Wednesday that "appropriate" action had been taken against the employee.
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Amanda Todd,” said Dave McGregor, president and CEO of Grafton-Fraser Inc., which owns the chain of clothing stores. “I will tell you, that the individual in question, is no longer employed with our company."
He added: “Out of respect for the family, I decided not to comment further on this situation beyond our statement that we took the action we felt to be appropriate.”
"Our company ethics are based on tolerance, respect and fair and honourable treatment of all individuals, internally, with our customers and the population as a whole,” said McGregor. “We have zero tolerance for the mistreatment of others no matter what form it takes."
